Small Time/Big Time: Independent Film in New England
February 25 - March 25, 2007
Sundays, 2:00 PM, in Sibley Hall
Made possible with the support of The Groton Public Library Endowment Fund
|
Join us at the library for the Groton Public Library's winter film series, Sunday afternoons at 2:00 PM, starting February 25. This year the series ventures in a new and exciting direction, featuring independent films with ties to Groton and surrounding communities.
The programs are planned for adult audiences or older teens due to some of the program content (violence and crude humor). The exception is the first film ("From Vietnam to Groton, Massachusetts," screening on February 25)—a documentary meant for general audiences that will also serves as the kick-off event for the GrotonREADS! program. With each film in the series, you will have an opportunity to hear remarks from the filmmaker or others involved in the production and you can pose your own questions. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the local film scene and how movies are made!

February 25 — "From Vietnam to Groton, MA," with filmmaker Minh Argabright
This short film is the first chapter of a trilogy that will eventually tell the story of Ms. Argabright's journey to the United States. The film ties in with the GrotonREADS! program as its subject is an American soldier telling of his experiences in Vietnam.
March 4 — "The Container" with filmmaker Andrew Sniezek
Andrew Sniezek, a Townsend resident and GDRHS graduate, is the Director/Producer/Cinematographer of REACTION Independent Studio's third and most ambitious short film, "The Container" (about 17 minutes). "The Container" is a dark comedy that puts an interesting twist on a chance meeting between two people at a storage facility. Andy has also been involved in a mentoring program at the Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School in Fort Devens, MA. Actor Mick Hoegen (Screen Actors Guild--New England), screenwriter Michael Belanger and composer Drew Krassowski will also be in attendence to speak about their craft.
March 11 — Comedic Shorts with filmmaker Kevin Anderton
This program featuring several short films by Mr. Anderton and his Midnight Chimes Productions, a Boston-based production company, will have you laughing in your seats. You can also check out several of his recent films on youtube.com, including "Mask of the Ninja" and "Center for Downward Mobility."
March 18 — "Live Free or Die" with filmmaker Andrew Robin
This is the only feature-length film in our series (92 minutes) and the first film by two New Hampshire-based writers who formerly worked on Seinfeld. "Live Free or Die" is set in a small town in New Hampshire and tells the story of a small-time hoodlum with big-time aspirations. Andrew Robin, one of the writer/directors, will be in attendence to speak about his film. Also appearing in the film are Aaron Standford (from Westford, MA, previously seen in Xmen 2 and 3) and Zooey Deschanel (who is currently in the new version of "The Bridge to Terabithia").
March 25 — "In The Tradition of My Family" with filmmaker Todd Davis
First-time director Todd Davis, from Boxborough, MA, will bring his award-winning film, "In the Tradition of My Family" (about 15 minutes). This film is about one family's extreme traditions and its effects on a father and son. It is based on a short story by Phil Lamarche, whose first novel American Youth will be published by Random House in April. Again, SAG actor Mick Hoegen, who appears in the film, will be in attendence.
All events are FREE and open to the public. All are welcome! Sign up online or call the library. Light refreshments will be served.
